Ideal Veterinary Hospital’s staff is filled with highly trained and experienced animal lovers who care deeply about their jobs. Everyone aims to learn everything they can about the field they love to give our patients the highest level of care.
Our team is also kind. The members treat each patient, whether healthy or sick, with love and attention. They educate owners on the importance of preventative care to keep their pets healthy while doing everything they can to help when their pets are not feeling well.
Dr. John Shaw
Lead Veterinarian
Dr. John Shaw has practiced veterinary medicine for over 35 years, beginning with his graduation from the University of Tennessee in 1987. He has been in Oak Ridge since 1993. Dr. Shaw’s professional interests include medicine and surgery of dogs and cats, with a particular interest in veterinary ultrasound. When not working, Dr. Shaw is a fan of all things University of Tennessee, the Atlanta Braves, and Tennessee rugby, and loves American history. Ask him about his picture!
Dr. Burge
Associate Veterinarian
Anne Marie Burge, DVM, is a seasoned professional with over 27 years of experience in veterinary medicine. Graduating from the esteemed University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, she has dedicated her career to providing exemplary care for her patients.
At Ideal Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Burge prides herself on delivering comprehensive and compassionate care to every furry friend who walks through the door. With a commitment to excellence, she ensures that each visit is thorough and tailored to meet the individual needs of her patients.
With a deep understanding of animal behavior and physiology, Dr. Burge employs her expertise in consumer psychology to communicate effectively with pet owners, fostering trust and confidence in her recommendations and treatments.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Burge is a devoted mother of four children, ranging from ages 1 to 9. Alongside her husband Chad, they embrace the joys of parenthood and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and swimming. They are avid readers and travelers, always seeking new adventures to embark on. While dreaming of owning a horse one day, Dr. Burge finds fulfillment in caring for her dogs and guinea pigs, who bring endless joy and companionship to her family.

With 17 years of experience in veterinary medicine, Tina Smith is a dedicated and compassionate Associate Veterinarian at Ideal Veterinary Hospital. Graduating from the esteemed University of Tennessee, Tina brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her practice.
Tina takes immense pride in her role, particularly in educating clients about preventative care essentials such as parasite prevention and animal nutrition. Her commitment extends to crafting personalized management plans for geriatric patients, ensuring each furry friend receives tailored care and attention.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Tina finds joy in spending quality time with her family and indulging her passion for gardening. An avid fan of science fiction, especially Star Wars, Tina enjoys immersing herself in imaginative worlds during her leisure hours.
With her blend of experience, empathy, and expertise, Tina Smith remains a trusted figure in the veterinary community, dedicated to the well-being of her patients and the satisfaction of their owners.
Dr. Fitzgerald
Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Andrew Fitzgerald is a recent graduate from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies. He completed his fourth year of veterinary school at Michigan State University. While in vet school, he had the opportunity to participate in several outreach programs that provided free veterinary care to local cats and dogs in Grenada. He also worked alongside a research organization to help the native Leatherback turtles during nesting season.
Dr. Fitzgerald’s favorite part of veterinary medicine is the day-to-day interactions he has with his patients and their owners. He is passionate about educating and empowering his clients to make the best decision for their pets. His special interests include dermatology, cardiology, nutrition, and surgery.
In his free time, Andrew enjoys various outdoor activities including scuba diving, watching soccer, and spending time with his family, friends, and his cat Mabel. Originally from Rochester NY, he enjoys skiing in the snowy NY winters.
